It encloses the sea area between the northeast shores of Istria and Croatian primorje to Bakar bay on one side and west coast of the island of Krk and the north coast of the island of Cres on the other side.
There are no natural obstacles for navigation in Rijeka bay, the sea is very deep everywhere. You enter the Bay through passage Vela vrata, Srednja vrata and Mala vrata (Tihi kanal).
ORIENTATION: On the west coast of the bay: bell-tower in the village Brseč, Moščenice; mountain gorge and Moščenićka Draga; a tower similar to a bell-tower on the Cesar point (Medveja); church in the village Veprinac above Opatija and Mount Učka (1401 m) with antenna pillar.
On the north coast of the bay: a bell-tower in Kastav, the town of Rijeka, bell-tower in the Trsat area above Sušak; Thermo-electric plant and Refinery to the west of the entrance to Bakar bay and an islet of St. Marko with arches of the bridge land-the island of Krk at the entrance to Tihi kanal.
On the island of Krk: monastery at Glavotok head; Malinska, Oil and petrochemical plant and bell-tower in Omišalj.
On the island of Cres: Steep points Jablanac and Grote, dark colours.
CURRENTS: In winter period there prevails half-circle cyclonal circulation with speed to 0.3 knots. The speed of the circulation depends on wind characteristics so strong "Jugo" and "Bura" can increase the current speed up to 1.5 knots. In summer period the circulation is considerably weaker, with speed to 0.2 knots; circulation gets stronger during rare passing of frontal systems.
THE SEA LEVEL: The mean amplitude of sea-level changes from 0.3 to 0.5 m. Long lasting stormy winds can raise the sea-level to 1.0 m (cyclone "Jugo") and lower it to 0.4 m (anticyclonal "Bura").
SHELTERS FOR BOATS AND YACHTS: The west coast of the bay is steep and poorly indented; vessels can find shelter in one of the smaller ports: Mošćenička Draga, Medveja, Lovran, Ika, Opatija and Volosko; on the northeast coast to Oštro point (E point at the entrance to the Bakar bay) in a few ports and shelters: Rijeka, Žurkovo, Podurinj, Bakar bay, Bakarac and Kraljevica, and on the west coast of the island Krk in a few ports and coves: Omišalj bay with a port Omišalj, anchorage Beli kamik, the ports Njivice and Malinska and small marinas Vantačić, Porat, Čavlena and Glavotok.
