Maritime piloting or pilotage means leading a vessel and rendering professional advice to the ship master by the authorized person( pilot), who is not a member of the crew, in order to ensure safe navigation in ports, straits, and other areas of inner sea waters and territorial sea in Republic of Croatia. Depending on the area of performance the maritime pilotage could be the port pilotage or coastal pilotage. According to the Clause 104, p.2 of the Maritime Code (NN 17/94), all ships in Republic of Croatia having more than 500 BT are subject to compulsory pilotage, excepting Croatian war and public ships, ships which maintain navigable ways and objects ensuring safe navigation on these ways, as well as Croatian passenger ships and ferries on their regular lines.
